The year was 1993 and John Bailey was President of our Lodge. I had been retired from Tredyffrin Township Police since July 1, 1991. I remained active with the Lodge, but felt that something was missing. Then it dawned on me. We don’t have a retirees group or club that meets on a regular basis.
After one of our regular meetings, I spoke with President Bailey, expressing my thoughts of getting retirees together to reminisce, or get together just for the sake of being able to talk to each other. I wasn't interested in changing any by-laws, I only wanted to foster friendship and fraternalism among the retirees, and to assist them if needed. John encouraged me to go ahead with my plan, and see what happens.
Our first dinner meeting was November 10, 1993, at Eagle Tavern, Eagle, PA. Since that time, we have been meeting at various restaurants throughout Chester County. We finally decided that the 4th Tuesday of the month would fit most schedules. We try to meet monthly, except August and December. August is the annual picnic and December is the Christmas Party at the Squad Room Lounge.
This is open to ALL members and their guests. 10 to 15 people now attend most meetings. Some are retirees from other lodges attend also. They live in the County, and enjoy being able to get out for breakfast with other retired cops! We openly invite our younger brothers and sisters in law enforcement to come to a meeting and listen to some of the stories that are told by the “old timers”. They are interesting and most times humorous. We always tell the young guys to listen to us, because they may learn something! I think we all learned something every time we went on duty.
November 5, 2003, we celebrated 10 years of being a Retirees Group. We had a buffet dinner at Baxter’s Saloon and Eatery in The Shops at Great Valley, Malvern, East Whiteland Township. Among our guests were District Attorney Joe Carroll and State Senator John Rafferty, of the 45th District. Both spoke briefly to us about the importance of local and State Government supporting Law Enforcement. They both assured us that Lodge #11 has their full support, and will be available for us when needed.
I would also like to say a very special thank you to President Kevin Moore, Past Presidents John Bailey, Les Neri, Steve Plaugher, the Executive Board, and my wife of over 40 years, Brenda, for your support and confidence in me. Without you, I would have never been able to accomplish what I set out to do. The award you presented to me is very special, and I am humbled and very proud to be among such wonderful and caring people. Thank you all!
Respectfully submitted,
Don Miller, Tredyffrin Twp. Police Ret.
